Case Studies

Andrea Webb, HR Partner at Willis Towers Watson attended our specialist CARES programme

Have you managed to use the content of the CARES programme with the people you support at work?

Yes, I have been able to apply the learning in more complex casework, where I am handling long term absence cases. Some of these are directly a result of underlying mental health issues (the knowledge of different conditions and of options/how best to respond is invaluable here) but when dealing with other cases, it’s also helpful to be able to recognise and respond to the impact of general illness/diagnosis on someone’s overall mental health.

In addition, the training is helpful when dealing with employees and managers on the effects of business decisions and providing initial support eg, redundancy, structural/role changes, diagnoses of long term illness.

Overall what difference has attending ICARES made to you?

I certainly wouldn’t have felt the same amount of confidence had I not been on the CARES programme. It’s given me a greater appreciation of mental health and the tools/resources available. I can also provide more effective advice to managers to empower them to support their teams.

I will definitely be recommending this programme to colleagues, and also to my wider HR network. I wish I had this training years ago!

The content is invaluable and the delivery was great too. Fiona the facilitator was fantastic – she brought so much of the content to life, sharing her experiences openly and creating a safe place for delegates to open up.  I learnt so much more by participating with people from a wide variety of organisations. I think this provided a richness of perspective, context and experience.

I have learned so many useful things I can apply at work, but it’s also triggered me to reflect on my own mental health and I now feel better able to support my family and friends.

I am very grateful for having had the opportunity to attend the course. I can honestly say it has created personal growth in both my professional capability and personal mindset. Keep up with the great work Suffolk Mind!

HR Manager at Beckett Investment Management Group, Caroline Southgate says our CARES programme has given her more confidence

“In my work, I am dealing with a lot of anxiety issues and employees that just want to talk through their problems with me. When I have a meeting with someone who is anxious or upset I know that I can offer a variety of techniques to help calm them. If I have a meeting on zoom, I lay the Your Needs Met cards out and use them during the conversations.

For the employee, they can see I am confident and know what I am talking about and feel more confident in talking to me. With the actions set, I think they feel like it is positive steps forward, not just a conversation.

I am very grateful that I was able to attend this course as I feel much more confident now.  Before I was ok holding meetings, but I feel its more structured now and I am not frantically researching before a meeting on the do’s and don’ts etc.

Even the techniques on calming someone who is distressed I have been able to use in my Cub Leader role as we have a young girl that attends and suffers from anxiety.”

We’ve spoken to Sharon Proctor, who works for manufacturing company Siemens Healthineers Sudbury Diagnostics based in Suffolk about our Workplace Wellbeing training.

I asked Suffolk Mind to provide Mental Health Awareness Training to our employees after I attended a five-day CARES Course for Professionals back in 2020. The message from this training was clear and uncomplicated about how we should communicate and support those with Mental Health difficulties in our workplace and at home with our friends and family.

“I came away from this training with a newfound enthusiasm and goal to bring what I had learnt to as many work colleagues as possible.”

Once inspired, I shared this goal with my manager so that we could become aligned and make sure that we all used this language in our everyday conversations to help everyone feel valued, cared for and supported. We wanted to contribute to an open and honest dialogue on Mental Health.

This training has now been rolled out to our Leadership Team, Extended Leadership Team (Managers), Leadership Forum (Supervisors), Wellbeing Champions and this month we are training our Level 5 (Team Leaders) and First Aiders.

“Since the training sessions, I have noticed such a difference to our younger workers, who feel they can speak openly and honestly about mental health, because they know they will be listened to, given the right support and signposted to our 24hr Helpline or other outside professionals.”

I’ve been told that because they have seen others come forward and seek support that they have felt confident to do the same.

It’s about courage and trust and knowing that we can all move along the mental health continuum and that we can all recover especially when the right support skills are used.

Why did you call on Suffolk Mind to provide training?

There are many different consultants and companies offering Mental Health training, but I believe that Suffolk Mind are the true specialists and trusted experts in what they do locally. I always feel very confident that they will deliver first class practical training sessions with the most up-to-date information based on the clearest Mental Health Continuum model.

Why did you think it was necessary to provide mental health training for your staff?

Mental health training is crucial to any business – it demonstrates that leaders and managers value the health and wellbeing of their people and it establishes the right culture of an organisation by making it very clear that the mental wellbeing of our staff matters.

Providing training and awareness in mental health is not only morally the right thing to do but it also makes good business sense; if employees feel that they can be open about any mental health issues they may be experiencing, then there is better scope to reduce the impact of the typical people management issues that often manifest (e.g. absence rates, poor performance).

How many of your staff were trained by Suffolk Mind?

Almost all of our staff went through the Your Needs Met Training. We also made the decision that new starters would be given this training and it would form part of our mandatory training programme. We are also going to build on this by rolling out further training delivered by Suffolk Mind – the sleep workshop is already fully booked with a waiting list of staff wanting to attend!

What did you and your staff think about the training by Suffolk Mind?

Excellent! We received overwhelmingly positive feedback from staff (even from those who may have initially been a bit apprehensive about having the training). It provided a real buzz with staff in the offices and I can’t speak more highly of the trainers – incredibly knowledgeable and presented the topic in a very easy and relaxed way. They pitched the subject matter perfectly to the audience.

Would you recommend mental health training by Suffolk Mind to other businesses?

Without a doubt! I have attended various mental health training workshops over the years which have been delivered by a wide range of organisations and providers, and the trainers from Suffolk Mind are easily up there with the very best!

Thank you to the whole Workplace Wellbeing team who have helped me organise and deliver the training for our staff – everyone has been so helpful and everything has always gone according to plan!
