Suffolk Mind offers a range of opportunities to join us as a counsellor, either as a volunteer, or on a placement.

Current roles

We are currently looking for counsellors (placement or volunteer) as follows:

Ipswich

  • Vacancy 1:     Client times:  Tuesday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical group supervision: 1st Thursday of the month 4pm – 6pm

  • Vacancy 2:     Client times:  Tuesday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical group supervision: 1st Thursday of the month 4pm – 6pm

  • Vacancy 3:     Client times:  Wednesday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical supervision group: 4th Monday of the month 4pm – 6pm

  • Vacancy 4:    Client times:  Wednesday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical supervision group: 3rd Monday of the month, 4.30pm – 6.30pm

  • Vacancy 5:     Client times:  Thursday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical supervision group: 3rd Tuesday 8.30am – 10.30am


Bury St Edmunds

  • Vacancy 6:    Client times:  Monday 5.30pm, 6.30pm, 7.30pm

Clinical supervision group: 1st Tuesday of the month 8.30am – 10.30am

  • Vacancy 7:     Client times:  Tuesday 5pm, 6pm, 7pm

Clinical supervision group: 1st Wednesday of the month, 6pm – 8pm

  • Vacancy 8:    Client times:  Thursday 5pm, 6pm, 7pm

Clinical supervision group: 3rd Tuesday of the month 8.30am – 10.30am


Saxmundham

  • Vacancy 9:    Client times:  Thursday 11.30am, 12.45pm, 2pm

Clinical supervision group: 1st Tuesday of the month 8.30am – 10.30am


Role summary

If you would like to become a counsellor with Suffolk Mind, either on placement or as a volunteer, below is a summary of the main tasks and requirements.

Main tasks:

  • Support a minimum of three Suffolk Mind clients each week, in person or online
  • Attend clinical group supervision, 2 hours each month (all groups are held online)
  • Abide by Suffolk Mind policies and procedures
  • Abide by BACP’s Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling & Psychotherapy
  • Keep clinical records of clients
  • Attend all mandatory training

What we expect:

  • To be in your second, final diploma year of studies or qualified
  • To attend monthly clinical group supervision 
  • To have your own personal clinical supervisor
  • To be a member of a professional counselling body
  • To have your own professional liability insurance
  • To commit for a minimum of one year

About the service

We operate a self-referral, easy-to-access counselling service. Our service is for any Suffolk resident (excluding Waveney) aged 18+. Clients come to our counselling service for a variety of reasons, but these could be relationships, family issues, personal crisis, bereavement, or other problems they may be dealing with. We offer counselling in Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich, Saxmundham, online via Zoom and by telephone.
