Bluesday Tuesday: Reading and wellbeing

Suffolk Mind would like to invite all Suffolk schools to take part in Bluesday Tuesday on Tuesday 10 February 2026, during Children’s Mental Health Week.

Suffolk Mind are linking our Emotional Needs and Resources approach with reading and mental health to tie in with the Year of Reading. We know reading is good for our mental wellbeing. Stories are also a great way to learn about other people, understand their emotions, and allow us to see the world from other people’s points of view.

What is Bluesday Tuesday?

Bluesday Tuesday is Suffolk Mind’s awareness day held each year during Children’s Mental Health Week. It’s more than just a dress up (or down) day for school children – it’s a day of learning and connecting with skills to support mental health.

We have designed activities for KS1 and KS2 children to do on Bluesday Tuesday, whether they are in school or learning at home. We’re encouraging children to create a cosy reading space, free from distractions.

For the younger children, we are using our story, Sammy the Sea Squirt to link movement with mental health. Every school in Suffolk should have copies of Sammy the Sea Squirt in their school library.

For the older groups, we are asking them to notice how their characters are moving in their books, and what more those characters could do to ‘move to change their mood’.

Why do we need to fundraise?

With our team of experts and ex-teachers, we have developed classroom resources for Bluesday Tuesday. Schools and home educators are welcome to download and use these activities in the classroom.

This year they are themed around emotional wellbeing and reading as we are proudly part of the National Year of Reading. We’re focussing on linking the need for movement and mental health with characters in children’s story books.

In return, we ask that you fundraise for us so that we can ‘pay it forward’ and provide training to local schools so that more school children in Suffolk can benefit from our skills.

Fundraising suggestions:

  • Wear blue coloured non-uniform, or this year we’re going for cosy clothes (ready for reading)
  • Design a blue poster for school with our top tips on
  • Create a cosy reading area for your classroom, or in the library as a class
  • Pair up older and young pupils for a read-a-thon
