On Sunday 27th September, Darren Oxbrow will be running a coffee morning at his home between 11am and 2pm in support of Suffolk Mind and Macmillan Cancer Support. Thank you Darren for choosing to raise funds for us.

Here’s Darren’s story:
Hi, my name is Darren Oxbrow and I’m running this raffle to raise some funds for Suffolk Mind and Macmillan Cancer Support.
In December 2022 I was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, this came about after I had been feeling poorly for several months, suffering with extreme fatigue.
Initially Doctors put this down to Long-Covid and other reasons, but I continued to push for answers as my condition wasn’t improving and I started to have other symptoms such as weight loss and extreme night sweats.
I was eventually referred to the Hospital as my bloods were also causing concern and once under the Hospital, I was put through several tests to establish what was causing my symptoms. It wasn’t long before they came up with the above diagnosis, although shocked, it put an end to the not knowing.
Unfortunately for me, my condition didn’t settle down, instead the Cancer became more active within my body and started to unsettle the blood levels to such a degree that I required blood transfusions, In the end having to have four transfusions in total, at which point my consultant sat me down and informed me that our only option was to start treatment and it would involve a 6-month cycle of Chemotherapy. Again, devastating news but I was very well informed about the process and what we hoped the treatment would achieve.
I started my Chemotherapy in September 2023 and concluded it in February 2024, it was a hard slog but one I got through with the support of my family, friends and of course all the wonderful individuals who were involved in my care.
Cancer has a huge impact on the individual but also everyone connected to the person with the diagnosis, both Macmillan and Suffolk Mind can support individuals and families going through a cancer diagnosis and any associated treatment. They collectively help by giving information in a way that makes it easy to understand and digest difficult information and then know how to take care of your own mental health, and those around you whilst navigating such a challenging time in your life.
Many people don’t have family and friends for support and must go through their cancer journey alone or supporting others in isolation which will be really tough.
Both MacMillan and Suffolk Mind needs community and continued support through donations and fundraising to ensure their work can continue to support us here in the county of Suffolk.
With 1 in 2 of us now being affected by cancer at some point in our lives, we need to ensure this support continues.
A secondary cancer followed my first diagnosis, which was also treated, and I am pleased to say that I have now finished all treatment, and the cancer has been put into a dormant state. Although I will never be cured of the cancer, I hope it will remain dormant for many years to come.
My ask is that you buy a raffle ticket or more, for a chance to be the proud owner of this signed ITFC premiership shirt, knowing you are doing something amazing for the people in our community. Enabling people to access support from Macmillan for their medical diagnosis and treatment, and for support from Suffolk Mind to help them to better manage the mental health impacts of living with cancer and beyond cancer especially with things like job security, financial concerns, family impact, treatment concerns plus prognosis and recovery.
