CARES: Crisis Advice & Recovery – Enhanced Support
Working in the voluntary and public sector service as well as within the HR team in a business or within a school setting, we know that it is rare for somebody to present with a single issue – people are complex and present with a variety of overlapping needs. The distress caused by these unmet needs increases the risk to the mental health of all involved.
We also know that the demand on mental health services far outstrips current capacity, as well as the expertise of services supporting non-mental health needs. In other words, people providing vital support need to have a much greater knowledge and skill set to handle the complex demands they face every day.

How is this course delivered?
The CARES training programme is delivered in 5 half day sessions and 3 full day sessions (we do offer an option to deliver over 4 full days and 3 half days) which can be scheduled flexibly over three to twelve months (subject to capacity) to minimise disruption to your normal service delivery.
We also offer CARES+ which includes two additional full day sessions as marked * below.
Both programmes can be delivered interactively over Zoom or face-to-face for 10 delegates.

Course programme and content covered:
Your Needs Met - half day
Understanding innate emotional needs and resources; the three barriers to securing good mental health; planning a strategy which meets emotional needs. Gain the essential knowledge that underpins emotional wellbeing.
How to work effectively with the human brain; The APET Model – full day
Four points of intervention when planning a strategy; unconscious patterns in the brain; understanding fight-or-flight; the language of emotion; the stress response; the relaxation response; the 3 ‘P’s’; challenging negative thinking and self-talk. Maximise the effectiveness of your interventions with up-to-date knowledge.
Understanding the Mental Health Continuum - half day
Understanding the mental health continuum in depth; gain knowledge of the signs, symptoms and medication; dispel myths and unhelpful beliefs; understand the overlap between mental health conditions. Gain profound insights about the mental health continuum and the REM State.
Effective Communication for Wellbeing - half day
Learn about our emotional needs and resources; learn how to stay clear headed and maintain self-control when faced with angry or distressed people; understand what language to use and what language to avoid; improve their confidence and morale when communicating with members of the public; be better able to support team members facing difficult situations.
A framework for supporting wellbeing: RIGAAR – full day
Bring your skills together into a coherent model; learn the framework to stay focussed with the most challenging clients; fine-tune rapport building skills; gather concrete information to boost change; set collaborative goals which meet needs; access your clients hidden resources; agree strategies which boost motivation for change.
Suicide and self-harm - full day
Use the emotional needs and resources model to understand suicide and self-harm. Learn how you can offer support and act to keep people safe. Look at the links between suicide and self- harm and identify common misconceptions. Build your confidence in talking about and responding to suicide and self-harm. Reflect on your own self care.
The cycle of addictions – half day
The relationship between mental health and addiction; the three components of any successful strategy to overcome addiction; reward and punishment mechanisms in the brain; the motivational cycle of change; the addictive component of self-harm and eating disorders; why self-medicating is so prevalent. Become more effective at supporting co-morbid conditions.
Ethics and wellbeing - half day
Why ethical practice is rooted in emotional wellbeing; what an emotionally healthy organisation looks like; the role of pattern-matching and perception in shaping culture; the two types of context-blindness in organisations and how to avoid them Protect your organisation from context-blindness and toxic attitudes.
Understanding Psychosis and Schizophrenia - full day *CARES Plus
Understand the psychosis continuum and different forms of schizophrenia; learn about risk factors and symptoms by working with case studies; learn how psychosis and schizophrenia can prevent a person from meeting needs; understand how medication for psychotic illness works and potential side-effects.
Understanding Borderline Personality Disorder - full day *CARES Plus
Understand how the diagnosis arises and its signs and symptoms; help with the challenges clinicians and service users experience; learn how personality disorder survival instincts shape thought and behaviour; learn how to address damaged resources and promote recovery; understand how to spot ‘splitting’ and protect yourself from its emotional impact.
