...offering a range of services to help people on the road to recovery

Programmes

We offer a range of programmes to people that are experiencing mental ill health or are at risk of developing a mental health problem. We are constantly adding to our range of programmes offered across Suffolk. At present a few programmes are only available in the East or in the West but we plan to expand these over time so they cove the whole county.

|  County wide programmes  |  West Suffolk programmes  |  East Suffolk programmes  |

Some anger and anxiety courses are accessed by asking your GP to refer you. Some courses are accessed by calling us and referring yourself. Ask your GP or call us to check. We are able to take self referral via both central offices, you will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when a programme is ready to start in the area you have chosen.

Sometimes people want to know more before they decide to be placed on the waiting list, so we also offer an initial appointment via our Advice and Information service, again accessed through the two central offices.

Programmes form a vital resource for other parts of our services and provide an essential route to recovery. Our current programme provision is:

  • Anger Management - County wide
  • Anxiety Management - County wide
  • Cannabis & You - West Suffolk only at present
  • Coping with Depression - East Suffolk only at present
  • Food & Mental Wellbeing - West Suffolk only at present
  • Healthy Living - East Suffolk only at present
  • Think Smart Drink Smart - West & Mid Suffolk only at present

County wide programmes

Anger Management course
This group is about understanding your anger, and the way in which you currently deal with it.

The course is run for the benefit of people who suffer from poor anger control and irritability and feel that their anger is having a negative impact on their daily lives. You will be able to look at ways of dealing with your anger that are appropriate and constructive.

Anger is a very normal and necessary emotion. It is something we all feel on occasions. It is a part of our natural defence system. What is really important is how we deal with it. The Anger Management course will help you to look at how you deal with anger at the moment and help you to understand why you deal with it this way. Once you have a better understanding of why you get angry you will be able to deal with it in more appropriate ways.

The course is run in a group setting, with two facilitators and approximately eight participants. For the course to be fully productive, course participants should expect to contribute wherever they can, using their own experiences to help develop everyone’s understanding of anger.

Anxiety Management Course
The Anxiety Management course will help you to look at what anxiety actually is, how it works.

We look at physical and psychological aspects of anxiety. Looking at ways in which you can reduce tension, and the effect that it has on you.

The course will help you to develop the skills of positive thinking, problem solving and assertiveness. We also practise various methods of relaxation.

We all get anxious from time to time. Life events sometimes create difficulties for us. Anxiety becomes a problem when we feel it for long periods of time - when it starts to have a major impact on our lives and seems to be controlling us and limiting what we can do. Sometimes it becomes difficult to understand why we feel the way that we do. Being in a group setting will help you to feel less isolated with your anxiety.

The course is run in a group setting, with two facilitators and approximately eight participants. It lasts 7 weeks and requires regular attendance.

West Suffolk Programmes

Cannabis & You
The programme is carefully designed to support the participants as they learn about themselves and their relationship to cannabis.

Some people use cannabis without serious problems. They seem able to stop when they choose. Others find it hard even to cut down, never mind stop. The course will help you to look at how & why you use cannabis now, and how you could quit and manage better in the future.

This is not just about cannabis. It’s about YOU and your life.

It’s not an easy option—its aim is to put you in control. It will offer you a new perspective and get you thinking about how you could change.

The course will run for eight weeks at a time with 8 to 10 participants, and regular attendance is essential for it to be successful.

Food and Mental Well Being
The course explores the links between how people feel and what they eat.

Often our ability to cope with stress determines how we eat. If we exceed our ability to cope we may find ourselves turning to unhealthy foods which we think give us comfort, but may impact upon our mood in a negative way.

Our relationship between food and mental well-being works both ways. How we feel affects what we choose to eat and what we eat affects our mental well-being. As individuals we each have the power of choice over what to eat and drink and most people know that some foods have a negative influence on their mental well-being. You will look at the psychology behind the behaviours and learn how to put yourself back in control.

The course is for people who are concerned that their choice of food is having a negative effect on their mental health and runs in groups of around 8 to 10 people, and is held over 7 weekly sessions. People will have a chance to share their food-related experiences and receive non-judgemental help and advice.

Think Smart Drink Smart Course
This course examines the relationship people have with alcohol

Many facts about the dangers and problems of alcohol are recognised by people, yet these same people will still continue to drink more than the amount recommended. This course will give people the chance to consider whether they consistently drink inappropriately and give them help to change their drinking habits.

Many people enjoy a drink, and never have a moments worry about it. But many people have questions about their behaviour or relationship with alcohol. We know too much alcohol is bad for us, yet we drink daily. We know we will feel awful the next day, yet we get drunk. We know how many units we should have a week, yet we drink more.

The course will help you to look at how and why you drink as you do and how to make changes to ensure you are in control and drink only what and when you want.
This course is suitable for people who are concerned about their personal relationship with alcohol.

The course will be run in groups of 8 to 10 and will run over 7 sessions. Help and advice given will be non-judgemental.
