From Felixstowe to the Falklands!

Fond farewell to Debra and Maurice Lake
Debra (Housing Support Worker for West Suffolk Mind) and Maurice Lake (Community Support Worker for East Suffolk Mind) have left us to start a fantastic adventure. On 9th November 2008 they fly out of Brize Norton to begin their journey to the Falkland Islands!

Together they will be the new Co-managers for the Lighthouse Seamen’s Centre.  Debbie and Maurice say, "This is a centre which is affiliated to the Royal National Mission To Deep Sea Fishermen. However it serves ALL seafarers who come into Port Stanley and Port William. Further, the Mission has a café which is open to Falkland Islanders of which there are some 2,000 in Stanley and a further 1,000 on the outlying islands. Our role there is to look after all people who come into the Mission. Alongside this our role is to create a Christian atmosphere and the Christian way of life. This will be a dual role working at the Mission and within the three churches in Port Stanley. We have the responsibility of the day to day running, planning, budgeting, accounting, staffing, volunteers etc. Overall a chance in a life-time to explore and a great challenge to us both".

Maurice and Debbie come originally from East Anglia. On leaving school, Maurice worked with the Port of Felixstowe in a number of roles - shipping, transport and warehousing - and then finally donned a pair of orange overalls and became a port worker. For approximately four years Debbie was a Sea Cadet Officer having begun as a parent helper and ended up as a probationer Petty Officer. Their common interests away from the workplace include gardening, music, reading, cooking and DIY. Maurice has served as a licensed Reader in the Anglican Church and currently is a Local Preacher within the Methodist Church.

Debbie says, ‘Both Maurice and I have felt for a while that we were being led to undertake a new role. Little did we expect this to be in The Falkland Islands. But we look forward to an exciting challenge, serving seafarers, and sharing God’s love amongst the local community.’

Richard Hines, chair of the Mission Trustees is upbeat: ‘Maurice and Debbie are the ideal couple to build on the solid foundation laid by their predecessors. They begin their new work together on 22nd November. To ease the pressure on everyone whilst the hand-over takes place, the menu at the Lighthouse Centre will be slimmed down. Then, as ‘new management’ takes effect, and other staff are recruited , we can expect some changes. But there’ll always be a warm and sincere welcome to seafarers and locals alike. The trustees look forward with anticipation to more fruitful years ahead.’

From all here - e will miss you but wish you luck in your fabulous adventure!
