Partnership Working in SaxmundhamPartnership Work in Saxmundham…Meeting the Needs of ‘Persistent, Frequent Attenders in Primary Care’.
Sometime ago Bridget Berry (Day Services Manager, East Suffolk Mind) and I (Raza Ahmed, Operations Director, East Suffolk Mind) met with Dr John Havard and colleagues from his GP Surgery in Saxmundham.
The problem in front of us was persistent, frequent attenders in primary care with common mental health problems but who were not prepared to access community mental health services.
There are probably many reasons why people wished not to access community mental health services but two possible reasons come to mind instantly: people didn’t accept the fact they had a mental health problem and the unfortunate stigma associated with community mental health services.
The idea we came up with was quite a simple one: if people didn’t come to our services, we would take our services to them! We started providing consultations at the GP Surgery; hopeful that we would be able to meet some needs; signpost people to other services and would have better success encouraging people to access the wide range of services we provide.
Dr Havard reports that the initial phase of this pilot project has been successful and anecdotally patients have reported that they feel calmer and more in control of their lives since input from East Suffolk Mind. News of this project has travelled and there are requests to develop similar projects in other areas.
