World Mental Health Day

Friday 10th October 2008 is World Mental Health Day.

World Mental Health Day is an intiative run by the World Federation for Mental Health. The following is taken from the website http://www.wfmh.org/index.html to summarise who they are and about World Mental Health Day.

In Bury St Edmunds on Thursday 9th October World menatl health Day will be celegrated in the Atheneum and on the day itself there will be various displays at venues around the county.

Who Is the World Federation for Mental Health?
WFMH is an international membership organization founded in 1948 to advance, among all peoples and nations, the prevention of mental and emotional disorders, the proper treatment and care of those with such disorders, and the promotion of mental health. The Federation, through its members and contacts in more than 100 countries on six continents, has responded to international mental health crises through its role as the only worldwide grassroots advocacy and public education organization in the mental health field. Its organizational and individual membership includes mental health workers of all disciplines, consumers of mental health services, family members, and concerned citizens. The organization’s broad and diverse membership makes possible collaboration among governments and non-governmental organizations to advance the cause of mental health services, research, and policy advocacy worldwide.

The theme for World Mental Health Day 2008 is “Making Mental Health a Global Priority – Scaling up Services through Citizen Advocacy and Action”, and addresses the continuing need to “make mental health issues a global priority”, and to stress the all too-often neglected fact that mental health is an international concern.World Mental Health Day has been organized annually by theWorld Federation for Mental Health since 1992, and is the only global awareness campaign focusing on mental health and mental disorders.
