Folk Night

What a great bunch of talented people entertained us on Saturday! We had four great bands, all very different from each other but all really good!

Place: Abbots Barn, Denham, Suffolk
Date: Saturday 6th October 2007
Reason: Fundraising Folk Night for West Suffolk Mind
Result: A great evening!

The evening was held to raise funds for West Suffolk Mind and, as always, we were warmly supported by everyone involved. Our thanks to everyone who helped us put this evening on. The money raised will be put to support our counselling service and so provide help for around 25 people to be able to change their lives for the better.

It has to be said, it was chilly in the audience, but the owners of the lovely Abbots Barn don’t usually take bookings so late in the season and we do thank them for allowing us to have our event there.

The music was excellent all night. The evening started with Mindset, West Suffolk Mind’s in-house band who did an excellent set consisting of some covers and some original songs, written and arranged by the band members.

Then came a break for the buffet and raffle. We would like to thank Green King, Tesco, Marchants Cookware, Bloomfields Electrical, Mr & Mrs Robins (who own the Barn) and Colvin Quarmby who donated prizes for the raffle. Thank you.

After the break it was straight back into great music with a fantastic set from the Walden family. Those of you who know us will recognise the name, Jane Walden is our Office Manage, but also a talented singer and guitarist. Along with her son Alex – also on guitar, and daughter-in-law Lizzy – on flute, Jane gave us a selection of lovely songs, beautifully sung and played.

After the Waldens came the Floozies, a different sound again, but also really good. Daisy, Paula and Sue gave us utterly lovely set and charmed all of those who hadn’t heard them before. The quality of the vocals and musicianship was really high and the sound the three of them produced was fabulous.

After the Floozies came Colvin Quarmby. Well! This really is one of those bands that have to be seen to be believed. They start with the rather good basics of being talented musicians with great voices, but they don’t stop there. The lyrics of the songs are extraordinary, the chemistry between the four works really well and the energy and fun made even those of us in the chilliest corners of the barn laugh out loud.

Eventually we plan to offer downloads of evenings such as this on our website but we haven’t quite got to that stage yet. So in the meantime, here are links to websites where you can listen to / download / learn about the Floozies and Colvin Quarmby.

The Floozies can be heard on their My Space site http://www.thefloozies.co.uk/ Colvin Quarmby can be found on their record company’s site Red Cherry  and their own website is http://www.colvinquarmby.co.uk/

Thank you to al the bands, all those who supported them, all those who set up the evening and packed up the next day, all those who donated
