Caring for Carers

Respite Care Service to Carers.
Please note: West Suffolk Mind only

West Suffolk Mind provide a worker, between the hours of 8am to 10pm, Monday to Friday, working across west Suffolk, offering support to adult carers supporting someone who are living in the community, who are suffering from mental health difficulties.

The focus is to spend time with the cared for in an activity of their choice providing Respite for the Carer.

  • This is a free service
  • Accessed via a phone call to Suffolk Carers - 01473 835420
  • Essential information will be taken by phone about you both
  • West Suffolk Mind will contact you to arrange a meeting in your own home
  • Following this meeting if all is well the respite is planned and set up
  • Time for the carer and fun for the cared for!

You can self refer or be referred to the service by contacting Suffolk Carers Mental Health Project on 01473 835420. Essential information will be taken and then faxed on to us. We will then contact you to arrange an initial meeting with both carer and cared for. An assessment form will be completed. This form will include risk assessment. At this point the decision whether to offer a Respite Care service will be made.

It is envisaged that support will be offered for a minimum of 3 hours per session, giving carers a real break. As this scheme has limited hours, the support given will be aimed at short term care, for example to attend a special occasion, to go out socially or to give the carer time at home alone.

The worker will generally spend time with the cared for in an activity of their choice, for example; swimming, shopping, bowling. If the person cared for refuses a direct service, time can be spent with the carer, offering practical support or engaging in an activity of their choice.

This service can make a real difference to the lives of both the carer and the cared for. It is flexible easily accessible and people that have used the service say that it was a valuable resource.
